About Us Meet our Members, our Director, and our Executive Members!
Our History
The South Fraser Community Band (SFCB) has been providing music throughout the lower mainland since 1989. We were originally founded by Koert and Gerritt Arink as the Surrey Community Concert Band in 1989. In 1990 we changed our name to the South Fraser Community Band. Our Members
Our current membership consists of approximately 25 people. We represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds including nurses, school teachers, scientists, engineers, housewives, students and senior citizens. Members have a wide range of musical ability, some boast an extensive musical background, many have picked up their instrument after several decades absence, and some have joined SFCB while learning a new instrument.
Musical Director - Larry Olson Larry grew up in Vancouver and was lucky to have been a member of the British Columbia Beefeater Band (Director, Gordon Olson). After completing his B Mus and M Mus at UBC Larry spent four years teaching at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1989 he returned to B.C. to take on the position of Director of Bands at Vancouver College, and spent the next 33 years teaching high school age boys to play and love concert band and jazz band music.
Larry is a versatile performer and still active to this day. He has played with The Vancouver Symphony, the Okanagan Symphony, and was principal percussionist and timpanist with the Saskatoon Symphony. Over the years he has played and recorded with numerous cover bands, jazz ensembles, and dance bands.
